Getting into the festive mood. German Style (from a southern's perspective).
Before children, my husband and I used to travel to Germany for Christmas. We'd tour the Christmas markets, drink Glühwein, hike the Zugspitze, sightsee, and enjoy being in each others company. One day I hope my children can share that experience with us. On those trips it wasn't about giving a fabulous gift because everyday was just that- A fabulous gift.
Here are some of my favorite experiences that we incorporate into our holidays every year.
If we live someone place that allows. We hike. It hasn't been the Zugspitze but getting out into the fresh air does the soul good.
After getting out it becomes time to get warm. The best remedy for that is Glühwein- which (side note) can be warmed throughout the day. Score!
This recipe is courtesy of Austria's Tourism Board.
The secret to getting a great Glühwein is the right mixture of red wine, cinnamon stick, sugar, oranges and cloves.
2 bottles of good quality red wine
2 cups of water
2 cinnamon sticks
2 oranges – cut into bite-size pieces
oranges for decoration
How to make it:
Put all ingredients in a pot and bring it close to boil. For additional taste, cut 2 oranges into bite-size pieces and add to the wine. Let simmer. Remove clove and cinnamon stick before serving it into lightly pre-warmed glasses. Decorate glasses with an orange slice.
Enjoy and drink responsibly!
After you're all warm and toasty it's time to set the ambiance (this is when I'd shop if I was in Germany). We like incense and bought ours from Kåthe Wohlfahrt (Yes, the Christmas Markets look just like that picture). Its time to light them. Pine, Frankincense, and Sandalwood are my favorites.
I have this smoker on my mantle. I <3 him.
Now you've got the drink, the smells, and hopefully your seasonal decorations out- the mood should really be hitting you in the solar plexus -in a good way. A way that makes you want to donate to Toys to Tots, dump your change into the Salvation Army bucket, and so much more.
If you're still not there- Check these out.
Pyramids are one the most precious center pieces. Light the candles and watch them spin slowly around. In the mood yet?
If you're done with all your shopping and you're feeling restless or -better- content. Head out to see the sights in your town. Maybe the museum? The Botanical Gardens? Find some Christmas lights (please don't drink and drive- Ghülwein packs a punch). When you get to bed that night I hope you'll think about the great a day you had. I hope you think about how you might want to make this a tradition every year.
So now you know what it's like in my house during the season (hey, there might be some yelling. I might say “stop touching the pyramid” at least a dozen times a day. That also might be why I know Ghülwein can be reheated and reheated and reheated 🙂
If you're hanging with us and ready for the next hop- here you go. It's Jo Richardson's turn.

What word you ask?
That’s where you come in. Every day we will give you a new clue to fill in another word in Fred’s Advent Puzzle. When you have replaced all the Freds, you just send your completed word puzzle by email to email@example.com
The words make up an Irish Blessing, from us to you over this Festive Season. If you know the Blessing, please feel free to send it early.
